With spring in the air, Bike Gaithersburg announces its month long list of activities to support National Bike Month, which is sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists every May. The month is dedicated to celebrating the joy of bicycling. We will be providing opportunities and resources to encourage people to think of how biking can be a fun everyday activity whether you are 8 years old or 80 years old.
For the second year in a row, Bike Gaithersburg will partner with Two Wheel Valet to offer a free bicycle valet at the annual Kentlands Day event on Saturday, May 2nd. Attendees to the festival can ride right to the center of the activity, drop off their bike to an attendant for parking, and not have to worry about locking up their bike or finding an available bike rack.
On Wednesday, May 6th, Bike Gaithersburg will be working with Rachel Carson Elementary School to hold its first bike train, an organized and supervised bike ride, on National Bike to School Day. The bike train will begin at Darnestown Road and Main Street at 7:45 am. Participants will ride along shared use paths and sidewalks to the school. Various stops will be made along the way.
Our first Kidical Mass Gaithersburg social ride will take place on Saturday, May 9th at 10 am. This season’s social rides will focus on the Gaithersburg Greenway. The Gaithersburg Greenway is a series of bicycle paths throughout the City of Gaithersburg that connect playgrounds, ball fields, ponds/lakes and other natural resources with our urban village centers. Each ride will focus on a specific neighborhood or connection. For the May 9th ride, we will meet at Main St. and Darnestown and ride on shared use paths to the park located near Lake Inspiration in Kentlands.
Lastly, Bike Gaithersburg will participate with the City of Gaithersburg who is hosting National Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 15, 2015. A Bike to Work Day pit stop will be located at Kentlands Boulevard and Great Seneca Highway. The event will provide an opportunity to try a new commute or re-dedicate to an existing one, enter a raffle for prizes, and refresh and meet other people who enjoy riding their bike to work. Various organizations will be on hand to provide resources to help people commute to work via bicycle. Sign-up for the Gaithersburg pit stop at the Metro DC Bike to Work Day web site at http://www.biketoworkmetrodc.org/
Bike Gaithersburg will be participating in the National Bike Challenge which is a nationwide event that runs from May 1st until September 30th. Points awarded for each day that you ride at least 1 mile. Monthly prize drawings are held. We encourage everyone to make a pledge to start riding or ride more on a regular basis and share your stories and pictures with us on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/bikegaithersburg. We may choose your story to be featured on our blog. You can sign up for the National Bike Challenge at www.nationalbikechallenge.org.
